Van Conner
Van Conner
A long time ago in a place called Ellensburg, WA, Van Conner and his brother Gary Lee, Mark Lanegan and Mark Pickerel formed a band called “Screaming Trees”. They recorded a cassette tape, bought a van for one thousand dollars and headed out on the road on a roller coaster ride that would take them to the outer reaches of the universe. This journey helped to create music that inspired not only the indie music scene in the late 80’s in America and Europe but carried on to bring about the popular music explosion of the Northwest “Grunge” scene. With the breakup of the band in 2000 (after performing their last show at the opening of Paul Allen’s Experience Music Project) Van put his musical effort into what were previously side projects that he started years before with members of Mudhoney and Tad (as well as his younger brother Patrick). VALIS created several records over the years and toured the states and Europe extensively. During this time he also released a record with Seaweed’s lead singer Aaron Stauffer on Sub Pop records. Van and Matt Vandenberghe recently founded the predominant northwest record label “Strange Earth Records” after deciding that local music needed to be heard again.
